If you enjoy it, go for it! What you should remember is that there is no evidence that your gender affects your ability to do science. If you do run into any discrimination (and unfortunately, it does still sometimes happen), talk to someone about it. Don’t suffer alone – there are plenty of people who will understand. Look out for women in physics/engineering/STEM groups at whichever university you go to – you can go to these to find support and advice. You can also find mentors to help you. Most people you encounter (men as well as women) will be friendly and helpful, and will care more about the work you do than your gender.

Just do it! There’s no reason why girls can’t study and work in STEM.

I think that if a career in STEM is what you want then that is brilliant. We need more females in these areas as we bring really diverse ways of solving problems and thinking about things that a field dominated by one gender or ethnicity will never achieve.

At times it will be harder being a female in these areas but hopefully times are starting to change and there are less barriers than previously. As Claire says – try and talk to people around you , particularly if you do feel that anything is unfair or you are being discriminated against. The best way to reduce discrimination is to bring it out in the open.

      Good luck!
