      It depends on the specific area and country, but it varies from 3 to 5 years. Some Ph.D. programs require you to study for one year before you start doing research while others jump right onto research as you start.

      Both have their pros and cons, but it is a great experience nonetheless. You are a student but also start doing real science for the first time, you usually meet a lot of interesting people and is very rewarding, even if you don’t end up doing science for a living afterward.
