I really try and work during the day, so I can be free in the evenings. A lot of PhD students can get into a really bad cycle where they work really long hours, and that stresses you out, and means that you end up wasting a lot of time when you’re supposed to be working. You might have heard the phrase “work-life balance” – it means that it’s important to your mental health and happiness to have time to relax, and see your friends and family. That can be easy to lose sight of in high pressure jobs.

I’m not a morning person, so I generally start about 10, and work through (with a lunch break!) until about half 6. Monday to Friday. One of the really nice things about being a student (and it’s true for some jobs as well) is that you can choose to work when it’s productive for you! So some people are really good in the mornings, and they get started much earlier, then finish earlier.

My schedule changes depending on what work I am doing each day. For example, when I am teaching at university my schedule depends on what classes I have that day – these can run from 9am until 6pm. Other things that impact on my schedule are which sports teams I might be working with. A lot of sports teams might train at the weekends, on bank holiday, over Christmas etc so I might have to be in working with them then. They also tend to start early in the morning and finish mid-afternoon so I sometimes have to be up very early to travel to see them! The rest of the time I am free to schedule my own work – whether that is preparing for teaching, planning training sessions, or doing research so I try and fit that into ‘normal’ working hours so as often as possible I can be home with my family in the evening and at weekends

I work from Monday to Friday, from about 8am until 4:30pm. My work has fairly flexible hours, and I’m definitely a morning person, so this works well for me!
