In my particular case, I was the first one in my family to be interested in the natural sciences. My dad is a literature professor/artist and my mom works in pedagogy.

I have colleagues from many different backgrounds, from the biggest cities in the world to tiny rural villages in countries I had never heard before. Often they are even the first ones in their families to have gone to university, but of course, some others come from a long tradition of academics.

I think, compared to other subjects, science is very open in terms of your cultural and family background, as long as you are passionate and put the required effort.

Not as far as I know. My mum works as a copy editor – so she reads other peoples work and makes sure all the spelling and grammar is correct (really useful for checking my work!) and my dad is a building surveyor so he checks houses are in a good condition and not likely to fall down! My brother is a policeman.
They are all really interested in sport though (everyone in my family plays hockey) so that is where my interest started and I got into science by thinking about how to make people better at their sport.

I’m the only one in my family who works in science, but I have family members who studied very similar subjects to me and who are engineers. Subjects like maths and physics make it very easy to follow different career paths – they’re useful in so many different fields.

Yep! My Dad and sister are both engineers – aeronautical (aeroplanes, wind turbines, cars, anything where the air moving quickly across something will affect it), and civil (buildings, bridges, roads, really a very important job!). Engineering of all types is really scientific, but in a bit more of a practical way.
